Joanne

I'm sitting at the dining room table next to my mom and we're both de-stemming spinach when my sister says from the kitchen: "Nancy, remember how you told me that you did acid? Was that a pretty intense experience for you?" I start laughing and yell back: "Maybe I should tell you about it later." The freaky thing is that I don't think my mom registered any of it. And the other freaky thing is that I think it's been years since I mentioned the whole "acid trip thing" to Joanne.

"She shoulda took up with him a long time ago. Before she started dyin'."

Suspension

Three_section_photo1_2 I'd like to bungee jump off of this bridge, but something tells me the trees would get in the way: Capilano Suspension Bridge. Anyway, I think we're going there tonight because it's all lit up for the holidays.

Liz and Tess's "Spiritual Journey"

Img_07931_2

Snagged this pic from Liz's weblog. It's a classic. That's Tess in L.A. posing with some handmade Brazilian costumes that her friend, Sydney, made.

Big News

My niece, Sara, is pregnant. She's only been with Dana for a couple of months, but ... I like him a lot. And that's all that counts, right?? We met his parents today (the ones with the Abysinnians) and I liked them even better than I liked the cats, and that speaks volumes. Peter does sound for the televised hockey games here. I took tons of pics of them and the cats and Dana, and ... I'll post them when I get back to the homeland. The sun was out today in the Fraser Valley and it felt really good.

Back to my Life

At this point I'm getting kind of anxious to be back in Michigan -- back to a bit of structure, back to my little basement gym, back to my computer, back to my calendar, back to my stunt car, back to my students, back to The Crossings, back to my people, and back to my "special friend." You know what I'm talkin' about.

Abyssinians

Aby1 I realized today that my sister Joanne looks a lot like the George O'Mally Character from Grey's Anatomy.

My niece Sara's boyfriend Dana's mom (got that?) breeds Abyssinian cats, so tomorrow we're going to see them. I'm very excited.

Spite. They're spiteful 'cause I keep winning at Scrabble.

Fake Eye Lashes

Today my mom took us all out to breakfast at Sophie's Cosmic Cafe in Vancouver. I'm sitting in the backseat with her and she suddenly asks me if I"m wearing false eyelashes. I said (like a smart ass): "No -- not today." And she said, "I never realized how long your eye lashes are." So, I said: "It's the light, mom. It's the light."

Jokes and Magic

Img_84001_2 My sister (who's 10 years older than me) told me that when I was a small child I was constantly making up jokes. But they were all bad. I was also way into magic tricks and I would do things like make coins disappear. The only problem was that my method of making them disappear involved swallowing them.

Alison

41003goldfrapp1Can't wait for the new Goldfrapp CD, Seventh Tree, to be released in February. Apparently it's a lot more lush and mellower than Super Nature and "takes some getting used to." I have a feeling I'm going to love it.

Status Indians

In Canada, Native Indians are called "Status Indians" and if they're registered, they never have to pay taxes and their higher education (university) is free.

Joe's Star Lounge

I was pleasantly surprised to find an email from Joe Tiboni in by inbox today. He had googled himself and his former bar, Joe's Star Lounge, and found an entry I made about him in 2004. At that time I had just returned to Michigan (for the first time in eight years) and I had written about how cool it was to hear his voice on WEMU where he's been doing a blues show for years. I haven't seen Joe since the late eighties.

Rainbow Butterfly

Went to a place called "Rainbow Butterfly" for dim sum today. Is that a great name, or what? One of the good things about being in Vancouver is having the chance to eat lots of good Asian food. I don't even know of any place in the Metro-Detroit area that serves dim sum. Yeah, I know: You guys in San Francisco are rolling your eyes right about now.

Quote of the Night

"I like the raw, blood-bathiness of it."

-- Joanne after seeing Planet Terror

Whenever I come here for Christmas I like to force them to see my favorite movies of the past year. So this week we've rented Planet Terror, Deathproof and Snow Cake.

When I was growing up I used to be terrified of things that didn't turn out the way I thought they would. But now that I'm older I see a strange kind of beauty in it.

Day After Christmas Song

Mp3: El Perro Del Mar - Oh What A Christmas

Love that song. It's haunting and freaky.

It snowed here in Port Coquitlam for Christmas. That is Rare with a capital R.

I got the Rough Guide to Cult Movies.

George gave me some of his Patron Gold tequila (which I turned him onto in the first place last year so I guess it's only fair). Fifty bucks a fifth at duty free. Can you say s-m-o-o-t-h? It really is more like an agave wine than a tequila.

Nobody seems to be excited about board games this year. It's like we need something new.

Last night I had a dream that I couldn't breathe. My throat had closed up and then Mark Davis helped me figure out that I was allergic to a certain kind of rock, which I had been encountering.

I put eye liner and "brush brow," as my mom likes to call it, on Joanne yesterday. She has very expressive eyebrows as it is, so with a little extra definition she becomes kind of a superhero.

Isn't it a bit overwhelming, trying to figure out who to call or write to and what to say during the holidays? I tend to be the kind of person who doesn't send Christmas cards or go overboard with a list of contacts because I figure that communicating with these people throughout the year is the main thing. That said, nobody wants to feel forgotten at Christmas. Ah, yes -- the crazy hoopla syndrome.

Nothing says "Merry Christmas" quite like Pee Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special from 1988.
